Our Club
Central is a family orientated club with a proud history in Newcastle. We value our people, volunteers and community.
Our History
On the 7th May 1910, the newly formed Northern Branch of the New South Wales Rugby Football League set down their first round of fixtures in the Newcastle competition. The first round was played on Saturday 14th May 1910 with four clubs entering the competition – Central, North, South and West. Central Newcastle, the ‘Blue & White Butcher Boys’ won the first premiership run by the Newcastle League in 1910 defeating South Newcastle 13-4.
The Butcher Boys have produced many international players including Clive Churchill, Wally Prigg, Bob Marjoribanks, Phil Hawthorne, and Mark Sargent.
Central won the Newcastle 1st Grade Premiership seven times in 1910, 1921, 1928, 1930, 1937, 1939 and 1949. The latest Club Championship was won in 2018.
2017 saw the introduction of Ladies League Tag to the Newcastle Rugby League Competition and the Butcher Birds were born. In 2019, Central were the Minor and Major Premiers, and have achieved the finals series every year since inception. Central continues to field a League Tag team in the A Grade competition.
In 2021, with the popularity of the Women’s game, Women’s Tackle was introduced, and Central entered our team in the A Grade competition. The Butcher Birds finished runners up in the 2022 season and continue to provide an increasing number of players within the Newcastle Knights representative teams and the NRLW.
Our Butcher Boys and Butcher Birds continue to impress on and off the field and wear the Jersey of this foundation Club with pride.
